A GP waiting room is often a place of anxiety and discomfort. Its design can significantly influence a patient’s experience. A thoughtful refurbishment can create a calming, dignified environment that reduces stress and supports wellbeing.
The principles of biophilic design are highly effective. Incorporating natural elements like plants, water features, and imagery of nature can lower blood pressure and reduce feelings of stress. Maximising natural light and providing views to the outside world are equally important. Where natural light is limited, a circadian lighting system that mimics the sun’s cycle can be beneficial.
Layout and seating are crucial. Arranging chairs in small, grouped clusters rather than long, clinical rows offers a sense of privacy and choice. Providing a mix of seating types accommodates different needs. Clear, intuitive signage and information screens reduce uncertainty and the need for patients to ask for help. A well-designed waiting room communicates care and respect from the moment a patient walks in, setting a positive tone for their entire visit.
