The Critical Role of Infection Control in Healthcare Fit-Out and Refurbishment

Updated: Sep 21

Infection prevention and control (IPC) is the non-negotiable foundation of any healthcare design. Every material and design decision must be evaluated through the lens of minimising infection risk for patients, staff, and visitors.

The principle of "designing out" niches where dirt and microbes can accumulate is paramount. This means specifying:

  • Surfaces: Continuous, non-porous worktops with coved edges that seamlessly meet splashbacks and walls.

  • Flooring: Sheet vinyl with heat-welded seams to create a seamless, easy-to-clean surface.

  • Fittings: Touchless technology for taps, soap dispensers, and hand dryers to minimise cross-contamination.

  • Furniture: Choosing materials that can withstand frequent cleaning with strong disinfectants without degrading.

Ventilation is another critical factor. Ensuring negative pressure in isolation rooms and positive pressure in operating theatres controls the flow of air and contains pathogens. A refurbishment project is the perfect opportunity to embed these IPC principles deep into the fabric of the facility, creating a inherently safer environment for all.
